Crafty Bastards- Sunday! Come!

Here are some pics from Crafty Bastards....current students, alums and Craft Mafia's form around the country. Long Live Indie Festivals!

I am tagging on to Rebecca's original post......here is the plan for Sunday's trip to DC:
Meet at TU at 10 am (Room 2006) drive to the Greenbelt metro station (to avoid traffic and parking), take the metro to Adams Morgan, peruse, enjoy and get inspired by crafty bastards, return to Towson by 5pm , inspired to work on in the studio! Perfect plan. It should be a beautiful fall day.....it will be so fun. Hope to see EVERYONE there.... Crafty Bastards Show in D.C. Sunday Sept 30. Megan Auman has a booth, and our awesome alums: Juliet, and Annie . I think it would be great to get a group of people together to go through the show. Anyone interested??

Bid to Rebuild

This is what CRAFT is all about: community. Good friends of my husband and I, that we met while teaching at the Orgeon College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon, had a studio fire in their current studio in Rhode island. It was a wood working shop and they lost everything in the fire. Devastating in s0 many ways. Can you imagine?! So a friend put together this auction to raise money for them to get their feet back on the ground. Here are some shots from the blog: bidtorebuild.blogspot.com. It is a great idea AND there is some great work on here. I wanted to share both with you all.
Please check your insurance policies now. And if you do not know about CERF, Craft Emergency Relief Fund, google and bookmark.

Metals Club Meeting Monday, September 17, 6pm

The first metals club meeting and officer elections is scheduled for Monday, September 17, 6 PM, CA 2006.

Sign up sheet for anyone interested in running for an officer position will be on the Metals Club board in 2015 by the end of the day today.

Glasgow School of Art- Wednesday 9.12 Lecture

Reminder that there is a lecture by a professor at the Glasgow School of Art about the Glasgow School of Art and public art. When I was in Glasgow I found it to be a lovely place: urban, alive, working class, friendly people and Charles Rennie MacIntosh's beautiful Glasgow School of Art.
The lecture is at 9:30am in CA 2033.

Chinese Art, In One Man's Translation- NY Times TH 9.7

There was a great article in the NY Times on Thursday titled, "Chinese Art, In One Man's Translation". Check it out on line at www.nytimes.com. Anyone with an email address containing ".edu" can access the Times Select portion of the the NY Times website and search articles back to 1981. The article I mention here has some great descriptions of what sounds like moving work. I am going to start posting the actual articles on the BB outside of CA 2015. I think it would be enjoyable to form a monthly discussion group where we (alumni and current students) get together at a place like Golden West to discuss things we read or saw over the previous month. Thoughts?

New York Times & Design

I recommend frequent visits to:
www.nytimes.com/design
Great on line slide shows associated with current articles.
Bookmark it and visit frequently. Your effectively doing your job as a designer/artist-in-training if you don't know what is happening in the world!
Read the NY Times regulalry and surf the Times' site regularly.
And Enjooooyyyy.

Metalsmithing On Line Discussion Group- University Level

Please join/subscribe to ACMET-L, Tyler School of Art's listserve discussion group.
The Tyler School of Art has strong art programs, and the Metals/Jewelry and CAD/CAM programs are very forward loking. You will benefit from reading and *participating* in these discussions. The list is underway for this school year and already there have been some interesting things discussed. ACMET-L is a way of expanding our learning opportunities, personally and for the field. Just like reading the Times regularly keeps you in touch with what is happening in the world, ACMET-L offers a way of keeping your finger on a different pulse. If you find yourself not appreciating the discussion that others put forward, then put subjects forward that are interesting to you. Our field needs strengthening; especially from the next round of practitioners.....there truly is no better time to start. Academic Metals Discussion List

For help, archives or management of your subscription go to:
http://listserv.temple.edu/archives/acmet-l.html

It has been years since I subscribed, I believe you go to the site above, reply and put "subscribe" in the body of the email and hit send. Your email address is attached via the email itself. Do it now in case you have trouble, you won't miss too much. Work together: two heads are better (and more efficient) than one!
Do it today. I will be looking for your posts.
See you on ACMET-L,
Jan

AnAtomic Factory- Italian Design Collective

Great article in the Thursday Times about Ikeahackers which profiled the AnAtomic Factory design collective based in Florence, Italy. The Syn chair (red dots) reminds me of one of Anne's ideas from class on Thursday. Nata Vintage chair shares some ideological territory with the Droog mentality. It is functional+. Is it sculpture? Only if it isn't used for sitting. The tea bag idea is interesting and the image of the satchel open with all of the individual tea bags in place reminds me of beautiful Japanese packaging...gorgeous arrangements of elements. The pendant solves a frequent dilemma of integrating the hanging mechanisms with the object itself....here it is seamless. Lots of other great ideas on their website...check it out.

Johns Hopkins Library- Homewood Campus

The Johns Hopkins library on the Homewood campus has a lot of great books on contemporary art jewelry. Many feature European work. Not being part of JHU, we cannot check the books out but we can use them. JHU library has nice quality xerox machines. Do they have scanners? If you have a digital camera, you could snap images and save ink and trees. Old habits die hard. This is a nice neighborhood...a great place to get coffee and a treat for being dedicated to your studies.

Art Opp in Waverly

Hello Folks,
The email below is from a colleague if mine in the Education program at Towson. There are a few faculty at TU who went through a program together who are intersted in local civic enagagement. This is something I would like to involve alumni in as you are interested. Feel fre to propose ideas to us as well.
Thanks,
Jan

I’m somewhat involved in a project in my neighborhood, which involved acquiring a building for community activities, one idea for the building use is to have after school art programs for kids in the neighborhood, ages about 8-12, although it varies somewhat who actually shows up. Anyway, do you think there would be anyone at Towson who would be interested in teaching some after school classes in Waverly, maybe there’s a professor who requires his/her students to do a community arts project?

Thanks,
Cindy
