ASU Intercollegiate Exhibition
ASU is hosting an Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition. Enter! Deadline to submit slides: September 7, 2007. This is a student show so your work will be perfect for it. This part of being a designer/artist-in-training. get your work out there! Good Luck! Side Note: Routinely photograph your work each semester so that you have professional quality slides on hand for exhibition call for entries like this. Time frames are usually tight.
American Craft Magazine
American Craft magazine has been redesigned beginning with the Oct/Nov issue. Do you think this announcement graphic is what the new cover will look like? If it happens to be, what do you think of the change? What does it indicate about direction of the organization? Be sure to check it out and see which direction they are headed in! So much change everywhere esp. in terms of art and design. The American Craft Museum recently changed its name to the Museum of Arts and Design.....

Undergrad Research Grants!
A word about this year’s Undergraduate Research Grants Program. The program consists of three types of grants; Research Grants, Travel Grants and Small Project Awards.
Research Grants:
Supply and expense grants of up to $500 per project are awarded to Towson University undergraduate students engaged in scholarly research activities under the mentorship of Towson University faculty members. Research funds may be used for supplies, books, software, equipment and travel as appropriate to the project. Projects may be carried out over one or two semesters and involve close collaboration of the student and faculty member.
Small Project Awards
Grants of up to $100 per student are awarded to Towson University undergraduate students engaged in smaller-scale independent scholarly activities under the mentorship of Towson University faculty members. The funds may be used for travel, admission fees, supplies, books, software, and equipment as appropriate to the project. Funds may not be used for stipends or reimbursement for services.
Travel Grants
Grants are awarded for students to present their research at professional meetings. The funds may be used for travel, housing, registration and meals. Requests of up to $500.00 will be considered. However, a higher budget request will be considered in unusual cases for which the need is thoroughly documented. Students must be the primary presenters of either and oral or poster reports. Preference will be given to proposals involving presentations at discipline-specific meetings where students may advance their scholarly and educational goals.
There will be one deadline for Research Grants each semester and two deadlines for Travel Grants. The deadline for Research Grants and the first Travel Grant Deadline will be four weeks into the semester (Friday September 21st). We hope to let applicants know the status of their requests within one week. We will accept Small Project Award proposals on a rolling basis.
Please share this information with your faculty colleagues and with the students you work with. We hope your students will be applying for funding this fall. HOLTZMAN MFA GALLERY
SEP 7 – SEP 29 DENNIS BEACH: Paintings and Sculpture
Reception: Thurs Sep 6th, 7.30-9pm
As a part of the MFA program, established artists exhibit their work at Towson and also visit with graduate students in their studios. One of these practicing artists, Dennis Beach, creates exacting, abstract paintings and sculpture, both of which are included in this exhibition.

OCT 5 – NOV 3 RON KLEIN: SPIN BEFORE TIME
LECTURE: Thurs Oct 4th Ron Klein, 6.30pm, CFA2032
Reception: Thurs Oct 4th, 7.30-9pm
Ron Klein creates sculpture with objects found in nature and from the urban environment which he combines with constructed forms inspired by these two sources. For this installation he will work with TU students to place thousands of sweet gum pods on the walls of the gallery, integrated with seed pods from the Amazon; the artist plans a gallery space that is both celestial and liquid, appearing as if underwater and simultaneously the night sky

OCT 5 – OCT 27 MFA THESIS: Dan Keplinger
Reception: Thurs Oct 4th, 7.30-9pm
Graduating MFA student Dan Keplinger was born with Cerebral Palsy. He says of his work, “I include images of my wheelchair and other objects that help me through life because they are a major part of my daily life. I morph these images with images of my body to create my own vocabulary. However, these pieces are about much more than my disability. Obstacles and challenges are a universal part of the human condition. We all face them in everyday life, although, we have a choice as to how we deal with them. Many of us are likely to get discouraged during difficult times in our lives. In my work I hope to show everybody that they have the ability to persevere.”

Reception: Fri Nov 2, 7.30-9pm.
Brenda Fike creates photographs, films, and installations. Sugako Kawai designs nature-based patterns that can be applied to domestic environments and objects.

LECTURE: Fri Nov 2, Rod McCormick: Digital Technology for Small Scale Objects and Sculpture, 6.30pm CFA2032
Artist Rod McCormick will present a lecture on his work which utilizes digital technology and ranges from small scale objects to larger scale sculpture and lighting. McCormick’s work is included in many publications and he has received an individual NEA grant and a fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. Recent exhibitions include the traveling Virtual/Tangible 2.0.

NOV 16 – DEC 8 ANNUAL STUDENT JURIED EXHIBITION
Reception: Thurs Nov 15th, 7.30-9pm
The annual undergraduate juried exhibition featuring works that represent the various tracks, including painting, sculpture, graphic design, illustration, metalworking/jewelry, ceramics, digital art, photography, and printmaking. Darsie Alexander, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Baltimore Museum of Art will jury the exhibition.
(CLOSED FOR THANKSGIVING NOV 22-24)
LECTURE: Thurs Nov 15th, Darsie Alexander, 6.30pm CFA2032
Darsie Alexander began as a photography curator, working first as assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art and subsequently as associate curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art. While at MoMA she organized numerous exhibitions, including New Photography 14, Robert Cumming: The Clutter of Happenstance and Sets and Situations. In 2005, she organized the critically-acclaimed SlideShow, the first exhibition to explore the history of projected slides in post-1965 art. She is currently curating a retrospective of work by Austrian sculptor Franz West (2008). In addition to her exhibitions, Alexander has written on performance art, conceptualism, and new media. With Johns Hopkins University professor Michael Fried she has moderated an ongoing series of conversation with major figures in contemporary photography, including Jeff Wall and Tacita Dean. Alexander is also a visiting critic for the MFA program at the University of Pennsylvania.
